      Cloud Peak Wilderness is located in the Bighorn Mountains of north-central Wyoming. The dotted frame in the access map to the right shows the area of coverage of maps on this website.       The areas include more t acres of unprotected land just east of Cody, Wyo., known as the Whistle Creek and Rough Gulch units, that border acre McCullough Peaks Wilderness. The McCullough Peaks are a prominent expanse of badlands outside of Cody that is home to many interesting erosional formations and also a herd of wild horses. The area is managed by the BLM and can be reached via the McCullough Peaks road which goes north from the Greybull Highway to the radio towers as well as several other dirt roads described below.

The McCullough Peaks Wild Horse Herd Management Area (HMA) is located 12 to 27 miles east of Cody (70 miles east of Yellowstone National Park) and encompassesacres of land, including the McCullough Peaks Wilderness Study Area.

This study area consists of flat-lying. The McCullough Peaks Wilderness Study Area (WSA) encompas acres along the north flank of the Peaks. It was established in to protect the north slope badlands from development. The acreage includes BLM-administered and state-owned lands.

The badlands of the McCullough Peaks highlight the beauty of erosion. The 6 mile round-trip hike along the McCullough Peak Divide Trail passes through very colorful badlands and culminates at the prominent, pointy summit visible from Cody, providing great views of the Bighorn Basin.

We drove the road up to McCullough Peak and through the HMA and did see the horses, but the road itself was quite a challenge, even for a 1-ton truck. The road on the peak itself, coming down, was tricky.
